We'll begin with Gaskill/Gaskell, the family I have the
least amount of information on, but the most about the surname itself.
Following Gaskill's history are the other family surnames.
Gaskell The first recorded use of the name
was in the 1332 Subsidy Rolls of Lancashire, by a 'Benjamin de Gaytscale'
. The name is derived from the Olde
English words 'Gat' and 'gil' meaning 'A deep valley where goats are kept'.
Gatesgill is part of the townships of Gatesgill and Raughton, Cumbria,
within the parish of Dalton. See image of Gatesgill
Fell More information about the area can be found on Steve Bulmans

Surname History
The family name Gaskill is believed to be descended originally from
Strathclyde Britons. This ancient founded race of the north were a mixture
of Gaelic / Celts whose original territories ranged from Lancashire in
the south, northward to the south bank of the River Clyde in Scotland.
They were divided into three sub-kingdoms, the Selgovians south of the
Clyde, the Novantii in Galloway in South West Scotland, and the Rhiged
to the south in Cumberland, Westmoreland, and Lancashire.
Cumberland is now referred to as Cumbria.

Legacy
4.0 from Millennia
In my quest to find a great genealogy program I have tried all of the
programs listed on the gen-index page. A few days ago while browsing a
website I found Legacy
4.0. The version I am currently using is their standard
edition. It can be downloaded for free. They also have a deluxe edition
that does much much more that is only $19.95.When I find a good program
I want to pass it along to all of my viewers. Check it out and see for
yourself. It is extremely user friendly... the best I've found so far!
The background images on my pages are mine, but the program offers many
wonderful graphics to use on their pages.

| Hadley |
Two proposed explanations of the origin of the surname
Hadley are offered. One is that it is people who came from one of several
places in England called Hadleigh which means heather covered clearing
or the second is that they came from Hadley (Headda's Clearing) in Worcestershire
in England. |
