Let's get these 1 CONC erroneous lines out of the GEDCOMs and other internet 1 CONC programs...so this misinformation will not continue to be 1 CONC circulated as gospel! The last James Hadley of the Somerset 1 CONC line died over 100 years before our Simon was supposedly 1 CONC born. This is an impossible lineage. We now know that Simon 1 CONC was living in Dublin in 1665, 1668, 1672, and 1685 from the 1 CONC various documents discovered by Fiona FitzSimons of 1 CONC Eneclann, Dublin, Ireland. 1 CONC (See Irish Reports ) We've also found 1 CONC further descendants of Benjamin Hadley in Ireland, not 1 CONC listed below. In defense of the earlier researchers, it was 1 CONC reasonable to assume that Simon came from the gentry class, 1 CONC as his petition of 1680 describes him as a Gentleman. This 1 CONC had great significance in those times, as the gentry were 1 CONC only 1-2% of society, and upward mobility was the 1 CONC exception. It is very likely that the parents and grand 1 CONC parents of Simon were gentry, so that is a significant 1 CONC clue. I think it is likely that the birth date of Simon as 1 CONC 1640 was an estimate by earlier researchers. I have never 1 CONC seen any evidence of his birth date, or those of his 1 CONC children.(The exception being Sollomon, who was christened 1 CONC at St Michans in 1672) The first proven birth dates I have 1 CONC seen are for the children of Simon and Ruth. As we find 1 CONC earlier and yet earlier references for Simon Hadley in 1 CONC Dublin, my suspicion increases that Simon was probably born 1 CONC earlier than 1640. Perhaps we'll someday find positive 1 CONC proof of all this, but in the meantime I think it's 1 CONC important to document our sources, and to be conservative 1 CONC and honest in our reporting. From:Hadley Society 1 CONT 1 CONT -------------------- There was no reference to the Hadleys 1 CONC in the 1663-67 Hearth Money Rolls for Dublin city. (Germany) 1 CONT 1 CONT The researcher is going on the assumption that the origina 1 CONC l John (1584) had parents in England, and that he had broth 1 CONC ers. His story begins when Queen Elizabeth was on the thro 1 CONC ne in England. This John was our emigrant ancestor in 163 3 1 CONC from England, of the Westpart, with his wife Esther, 3 s 1 CONC ons and a daughter.. 1 CONT 1 CONT He emigrated with his family to Roxbury, Ma, in 1633. Hi 1 CONC s name appears in the Elliott's Church record. He was mad 1 CONC e a freeman with John Walker, Wm. Brenton, Thomas Hubbard a 1 CONC nd John Baker in Boston, MA,on 14 May, 1634 (or) in 1635 1 CONC . He removed to Hartford, CT, in 1639 and in 1650 he wen t 1 CONC to Middletown, CT. He died there. He was one of the pio 1 CONC neers in the discovery of Connecticut and in settlements th 1 CONC ere. His wife Esther died a long time before him. It look 1 CONC s as if she died right after they were married, perhaps fro 1 CONC m the first childbirth? John married second, it appears, t 1 CONC o Susanna Shakespeare, the daughter of William Shakespeare 1 CONC , the famous bard. It was she who was the mother of his ch 1 CONC ildren John, born 1619, Richard, 1620, Sarah , 1622, an d 1 CONC Samuel, 1626, all born in England. 1 CONT 1 CONT John settled first in Cambridge when he arrived from Covent 1 CONC ry or Meriden, Warwickshire, England in 1633 at Boston. S 1 CONC oon he removed to Roxbury where the prefix of respect, Mr. 1 CONC , was accorded to him on the records of Mr. Eliot's church 1 CONC . This prefix was given to only a few persons and it indic 1 CONC ated that they were entitled to great honor. This same yea 1 CONC r he and John Oldham and two other men started for the Conn 1 CONC ecticut River, where they were reported to be in October o 1 CONC f that year. 1 CONT 1 CONT John knew John Oldham (who was a prosperous trader who ha d 1 CONC earlier quarrelled with the Pilgrim fathers, but had beco 1 CONC me reconciled). Our John and John Oldham and two others lef 1 CONC t Massachusetts Bay and started on an expedition to the Con 1 CONC necticut River in September of 1633. Their purpose was t o 1 CONC explore and to trade. They went as far as the future sit 1 CONC es of Hartford and Wethersfield , lodging in Indian village 1 CONC s along the way. John may have also been the Hall listed wi 1 CONC th a second expedition to Connecticut in November of the sa 1 CONC me year. This time they got lost and found much smallpox a 1 CONC nd no trade among the Indians, the old accounts say. 1 CONT 1 CONT The adventure ended in 1634 when they returned to the Bay t 1 CONC owns. It was their report of the rich lands on the Connecti 1 CONC cut River which led to the migration from Dorchester and Ca 1 CONC mbridge to Wethersfield, Windnsor and Hartford in 1635 an d 1 CONC 1636. 1 CONT 1 CONT John was young and unmarried and was just starting out in l 1 CONC ife. He occupied his time in a way that may have set the pa 1 CONC ttern for a number of his descendants, including his 4th gr 1 CONC eat-grand son, Elbridge Gerry Hall. 1 CONT 1 CONT He came from England as part of the Rev. Thomas Hooker's c 1 CONC ompany. He was either part of the advance party that arriv 1 CONC ed in 1632 at Cambridge, or, he was with the Hartford found 1 CONC ers (Thomas Hooker's group) in the fall of 1635. They cam 1 CONC e by way of Holland on the two ships, Griffin and Bird. The 1 CONC y landed on 4 September 1633. (Was this the landing in Hol 1 CONC land?) Thomas Hooker was one of the foremost of colonial pa 1 CONC stors and was considered more democratic in his thinking th 1 CONC an most of the other religious leaders of Massachusetts Bay 1 CONC . When he was made a freeman , John was either with the ad 1 CONC vance settlers to Wethersfield in the fall of 1634, plantin 1 CONC g onions a few miles below the Dutch post. with 10 others l 1 CONC ed by John Oldham. One thing is for sure : our John was i 1 CONC n Hartford as one of the first Puritan settlers and that h 1 CONC e went to the Pequot War of 1637 from there. He saw servic 1 CONC e in May and June of that year with Captain John Mason an d 1 CONC other CT men. The Pequot War was bloody , vengeful and sh 1 CONC ort, and the Pequot tribe never recovered from it. John Ha 1 CONC ll and the other Puritans felt justified because of the yea 1 CONC rs of attacks, scalpings and other depredations that had be 1 CONC en endured. 1 CONT 1 CONT As a result of his war service, John received 6 ac. of lan 1 CONC d "by courtesie of the towne" of Hartford. The land was o 1 CONC n Lord's Hill, later called Asylum Hill, and was describe 1 CONC d in a 1902 account as being located south of Asylum Stree 1 CONC t and west of the railway. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1650 the domain of the great Sachem Sowheag (Indian chie 1 CONC f) at Mattabeseck was invaded by the English. He made th e 1 CONC palefaces welcome, as he had done in the past, giving lan 1 CONC ds to Governor Haynes, even though he was powerful enough t 1 CONC o destroy the few families that settled there. Apparentl y 1 CONC some land was purchased from the Indian chief. Part of N 1 CONC ew Haven was purchased by the English from his son, Montawe 1 CONC se. His fort or castle was on Indian Hill, away from the s 1 CONC ettlers. He had a whistle which he would use to call all h 1 CONC is warriors together, as many as 500, whose wigwams were th 1 CONC ick all along both sides of the Connecticut River. 1 CONT 1 CONT Into this morass moved John Hall and Esther (I question thi 1 CONC s; he was probably married to Susanna by now and she bore h 1 CONC is 3 sons and a daughter. Esther was dead early on). his w 1 CONC ife, 3 sons and a daughter, to make their homes. In Novemb 1 CONC er 1653, the place was named Middletown. There were possi 1 CONC bly 30 families living there by 1654. Twenty years later th 1 CONC ere were only 52 householders in the town. John was with J 1 CONC ohn Richard and Samuel Hall, his sons. It is said the Hall 1 CONC s of Middleboro had in England a coat of arms with the mott 1 CONC o, 'Fidelity'. This one word aptly describes the characte r 1 CONC of this family. 1 CONT 1 CONT They were the first settlers in Long Hill, which began nea 1 CONC r 1675. They spread out from the First Society of Middleto 1 CONC wn, and soon others followed. The Halls were stout, strong 1 CONC , intellectual people. There is amongst the old papers in t 1 CONC he family at Long Hill a deed of land from John Hall, Ensig 1 CONC n, and wife to their son, John Hall. Also, a paper conferr 1 CONC ing on John Hall a Captain's commission signed by John Wint 1 CONC hrop, Gov. of Connecticut. 1 CONT 1 CONT The settlers had a great deal of heavy work in clearing of 1 CONC f the stones, as the old moss-covered walls will show. Nea 1 CONC rly enough stones to fence the land were found on its surfa 1 CONC ce, and in some places were large boulders. These were cu t 1 CONC and used for cellar walls. 1 CONT 1 CONT The first vote of Middletown, of which any record is kept , 1 CONC is the following: 'Feb. the 10th , 1652. it was agree d 1 CONC at a meeting at John Hall's hous, to build a meeting hou s 1 CONC and to make i t twenty fot square and ten fot between sil l 1 CONC and plat, the heygt of it'. We are glad to know that th e 1 CONC meeting to plan for the first meetinghouse was held at 'J 1 CONC ohn Hall's hous.' This fact throws light on his circumstan 1 CONC ces and standing in the little community. The earliest rec 1 CONC ords of Middletown show that he was a man of distinction am 1 CONC ong his associates. 1 CONT 1 CONT The original deed from the Indians to the inhabitants of Mi 1 CONC ddletown was witnessed by John Hall and entered by John Hal 1 CONC l, Jr. in the old court book of records. The first meeting 1 CONC house stood near the entrance to the first graveyard, now c 1 CONC alled Riverside Cemetery. 150 ac. were laid out for a pars 1 CONC onage, and a large piece of land for a 'common'. The old la 1 CONC nd records show one of the first land deeds went to John Ha 1 CONC ll of Buck Point, bounded south and east by the Connecticu 1 CONC t River. This point is opposite the city were the river tur 1 CONC ns toward the straits, and is now some distance inland owin 1 CONC g to the accumulation around it of sand and debris brough t 1 CONC down by the freshets year by year. 1 CONT 1 CONT He was in Middletown in 1650 and had a home lot of 5 ac. w 1 CONC as located on the NE corner of Main and Washington streets 1 CONC . It extended down to the Great River and adjoined the hom 1 CONC elot of his son-in-law, Thomas Wetmore(Sarah's husband). Mr. Wilkes paid her fare across 1 CONC the ocean, she lived in his family, and he promised 10 lbs. 1 CONC to her upon her marriage. Her husband, John Hall, had to 1 CONC go to court to collect this money; it appeared on the 1 CONC records many times. Thirteen generation ago, she and her family were 1 CONC Quaker martyrs. Actually her name was Provided. Her name is 1 CONC confused in the "Ballad of Cassandra Southwick", because 1 CONC poet John Greenleaf Whittier used her mother's name to 1 CONC indicate the "prophetic" nature of her trials. The 1 CONC Southwicks owned the first glass factory in Massachusetts 1 CONC bay colonies. This was in Salem, about thirty or forty 1 CONC years before the witch trials. They also own a small farm. 1 CONC As Quakers, they had their own meetings and and did not go 1 CONC to church. The parents were arrested and jailed for "not 1 CONC attending church". After a year in jail, their glass 1 CONC factory, home and farm were all sold at auction for "back 1 CONC taxes". When the auction did not raise enough to cover even 1 CONC one year's taxes, the two oldest children were ordered to 1 CONC be sold at auction, too! The 15 year old girl, was given 1 CONC many lashes for being mouthy. Both kids were sold to a ship 1 CONC bound for the Caribean, but after a week the ship couldn't 1 CONC get a wind to take it out of the harbor. The sailors said 1 CONC it was cause God was protecting the children. So they let 1 CONC the children off, and the she and brother walked to New 1 CONC York in the middle of winter. (No roads even existed). At 1 CONC Pitt's urging, the King told Massachusetts to go easier on 1 CONC the Quakers. So her parents were given a "Christmas Day 1 CONC Amnesty" that is, they were put in an open boat and told 1 CONC never to return to Massachuesetts. They managed to make it 1 CONC to Shelter Island, New York (at the end of Long Island), 1 CONC and they died of exposure. A large stone monument is there. 1 CONC Now, that's the story you'll read from the Quakers. I think 1 CONC she actually just went to the Providence Plantation in 1 CONC Rhode Island where Provided married Samuel Gaskill. Get a 1 CONC copy of Whittier's Ballad. It's really very good. 0 @I243@ INDI 1 NAME James /Yancey/ 2 GIVN James 2 SURN Yancey 2 NPFX Sr 2 NSFX Sr 2 SOUR @S78@ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE Abt 1713 2 PLAC VA 2 SOUR @S78@ 1 DEAT 2 DATE Abt 1779 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC 2 SOUR @S78@ 1 RELI 2 PLAC Church Of England 1 OCCU 2 PLAC Planter 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1734 2 PLAC Hanover Co, VA Recvd Land From Father, Charles Yancey 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1739 2 PLAC Granted 400 Acres By George Ii, Hanover Co, VA 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1743 2 PLAC Deeded 50 Acres By Benjamin Brown, Louisa Co, VA 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1750 2 PLAC Deeds 400 Acres To James Anthony, Louisa Co, VA 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1752 2 PLAC Deeded 1280 Acres By Robert Jones, Granville Co, VA 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1752 2 PLAC Louisa Co, VA, Deeds 281 Acres To Cleavers Duke 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1757 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC, Deeds 110 Acres To Mary Baynes 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1760 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Deeds 100 Acres To Samuel White 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1760 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Granted 636 Acres 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1761 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Wife [Elizabeth] Relinquishes Dower 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1761 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Deeds 618 Acres To Larkin Johnson 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1761 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Deeds 636 Acres To Joseph Harrison 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1761 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Deeds Land To Thornton Yancey 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1765 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Deeds To Jesse Saunders 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1771 2 PLAC Tyron Co, NC Granted 300 Acres 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Deed Record 2 DATE 1778 2 PLAC Granville Co, NC Land Entry 640 Acres 1 EVEN 2 TYPE Misc.
