She was called the Empress Maud, being the widow of Henry V, Emperor of the Roman Empire and later of Germany, whom she had married Jan. 7, 1114. From the first Geoffrey tried to profit by his marriage, and after the death of Henry I, Dec. 1, 1135, la id the foundation for the conquest of Normandy, by a series of campaigns; ab out the end of 1135 or beginning of 1136 he entered that country and rejoined his wife, the Countess Maud. After many battles he received the submission of Argentan, Domfront, Bayeux, Caen and Falaise. In March, 1141, on hearing of his wife's success in England he entered Normandy, and many towns surrender ed, and in 1144 he entered Rouen and received the ducal crown of Normandy in its cathedral. Finally in 1149, after crushing a last attempt at revolt, he handed over the Duchy to his son Henry, who received the investiture at tfhe hands of the King of France. Geoffrey Plantagenet had, by Maud, who died Sept. 10, 1167, a son and successor Henry, Count of Anjou, who ascended the throne of England as Henry II. Gilbert fitz Gilbert de Clare was high in the fav or of Henry I, perhaps because his wife Isabell, daughter of Robert de Beaumo nt, Count of Meulan and Earl of Leicester, was one of Henry's favorite mistre sses. When Gilbert's uncle Roger died without heirs, Henry granted Gilbert the lordships of Bienfaite and Orbec in Normandy. When another uncle, Walter, lord of Netherwent in South Wales, died without issue in 1138, King Richard g ave Gilbert this lordship in addition to the lordship of Pembroke, which had been forfeited by Arnulf of Montgomery in 1102. Luke Stevens' g enealogy based on Kelley, O'Hart, Turton, calls him "Diarmuid na- nGall MacMu rrough". He called upon RICHARD "STRONGBOW" DE CLARE to assist him in his his power struggle with rival Irish rulers, giving his dau, EVE to STRONGBOW as wife. 757203416. Robert De Quincy, son of Saher De Quincy and Maud De Senlis, was born about 1100 43,44 and died about 1198 43,44 about age 98.

General Notes: Line from "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Baron s," Carr P. Collins (Dallas, 1959), pp.208-09. Robert appears as a witness in some of the charters of Malcolm IV. Cf. "Pedigrees of Some of the Emperor Cha rlemagne's Descendants," Aileen Lewers Langston & J. Orton Buck, Jr., p. 49. --------------------------- The Following was taken from Jim Stevens' website : http://www.gendex.com/users/jast/ Weis" "Ancestral Roots. . ." (53:27). H is older brother, Saher II, inherited the English estates from SAHER I. Robert started appearing in Scottish records around 1165. His career was doubtless a dvanced by his second cousins Malcolm and WILLIAM THE LION (RIN 1913), success ively kings of Scotland, and it was certainly KING WILLIAM who granted to him the site of the old castle of Forfar and a toft in Haddington. While his broth er Saher II was serving HENRY II as a justice in Normandy, Robert was acting a s Justiciar of Scotland, an office which he held from 1171 to 1178. Royal favo ur may also have brought about his marriage, at a date unknown, to a notable h eiress, ORABILE, daughter of NESS son of WILLIAM. Her father, a prominent but ill-documented figure, was apparently a first-generation Norman-Scot. ORABILE was heir to her father's lands, to the exclusion of his sons Constantine and Patrick, and thus brought to Robert estates at Gask and Deuglie, in Perthshire , at Leuchars, Lathrisk, Beath and elsewhere in Fife, and at Tranent, in Lothi an. This fortunate marriage helped to raise Robert in a short time to a level of importance in Scotland greater than the relatively minor position which his brother Saher II held in English society. Twelfth-century Scotland was a lan d of opportunity and a vigorous younger son such as Robert de Quincy could mak e there a name which might become known well beyond the bounds of the small no rthern kingdom. In 1190 Robert joined King Richard I on the Third Crusade, was constable of a force to take aid to Antioch in 1191 and in the same year was sent with HUGH III, DUKE OF BURGUNDY (RIN 3796) to Tyre to collect prisoners from PHILIP AUGUSTUS, KING OF FRANCE (RIN 3163). On his return from the crusad e, Robert took part in Richard I's campaigns in Normandy in 1194 and 1196. On the death of his nephew Saher III, before 1192, Robert succeeded to the Englis h estates of the family's main line and added these to his Scottish possession s. By the time of his death, which took place before Michaelmas, 1197, he had proved himself as a knight of wide experience and had established his position as an Anglo-Scottish baron of some prominence. The marriage of Robert and OR ABILE was apparently ended by a separation. She later married Gilchrist, earl of Mar, while Robert married a lady named Eve, who may possibly have been of t he family of the lords of Galloway. The matrimonial complexities of this situa tion have caused a controversy which need not be entered upon here.

Robert married Orabella De Leuchars. Orabella was born about 1131.43,44

The child from this marriage was:

378601708       i.  Saier II De Quincy Earl Of Winchester, Surety (born about 1154 in Winchester, Hampshire, England - died on 3 Nov 1219 in Damietta, Egypt)

757203417. Orabella De Leuchars, daughter of Unknown Ness and Unknown, was born about 1131.43,44

General Notes: She is also known as Arabella. At her father's d eath, she brought to Roger de Quincy "Leuchers" in Fife and "Duglyn" among the Ochils. --------------------------- The Following was taken from Jim Stevens ' website : http://www.gendex.com/users/jast/ Weis" "Ancestral Roots. . ." (5 3:27). Two points about ORABILE's rather unusual name deserve notice in passi ng. The name occurs in French chansons de geste, both as a man's name and as t he name of a queen of Arabia, and the fact that NESS chose to give it to his d aughter is a reminder that French culture in the form of popular literature was penetrating into Scotland in the first half of the twelfth century. As Pro fessor Graeme Ritchie has demonstrated so amply, the Normans were not merely w arrior-knights and they were interested in more than legal concepts such as th e knight's fee. The later history of the name is equally interesting. It desce nded from Orabile to her granddaughter, who was the daughter of SAHER DE QUINC Y IV, first earl of Winchester. This Orabile II married Richard de Harcourt a nd passed the name on to her own granddaughter, the daughter of Alice la Zouch e. The first Orabile is apparently the first known holder of the name, which d oes not occur regularly in England or Scotland until the thirteenth century. I t seems likely that she had at least a share, through her marriage into the Qu incy family, in popularising the name and in transferring it from a Scoto-Norm an context to an English context: a significant if minor by-product of the int ernational links of one Anglo-Scottish family. The name ultimately became Arab ella and in this form remained popular in Scotland.

Orabella married Robert De Quincy. Robert was born about 1100 43,44 and died about 1198 43,44 about age 98.

757203418. Robert, 3Rd Earl Of Leicester De Beaumont was born about 1130 43,44 and died in 1168 43,44 about age 38.

Louis VII (born 1120, ruled 113 7-80) was the eldest son of Louis VI. Shortly before his death, Louis VI arranged for his son's marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. By this marriage southwest France was added to the domains of the new French king. Unfortunately Louis, who was very religious and prone to be jealous, soon discovered that his beautiful queen was a capricious flirt.

In 1147 Louis departed for the Holy L and on the Second Crusade, taking his queen with him. This Crusade was a miserable failure (see Crusades). After they returned, Louis had his marriage annulled in 1152. Eleanor at once sent an embassy to Henry, count of Anjou and duke of Normandy, proposing marriage.

Henry was overjoyed because the alliance transferred to him the great duchy of Guienne. Two years later Henry and Eleanor were crowned king and queen of England (see Henry, Kings of England, " Henry II"). France thus lost a rich territory to England, its greatest rival.

Source: Compton's Encyclopedia (America Online, 1995 ------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- Louis VII (1 137-1180) was the man of whom Eleanor of Aquitaine said that she had married a king only to find him a monk. He labored conscientiously at his royal tasks , but his virtues ruined him. His devotion to government appeared to Eleanor as marital neglect; his patience with her amours added insult to negligence; she divorced him, and gave her hand and her duchy of Aquitaine to Henry II of England. Disillusioned with life, Louis turned to piety, and left to his son the task of building a strong France. Source: "The Age of Faith" - Will Durant (p. 689) Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ."
