Henry II (of England) (1133-89), king of England (1154-89), first monarch of the house of Anjou, or Plantagenet, an important administrative reformer, who was one of the most powerful European rulers of his time. Born March 5, 1133, at Le Mans, France, Henry became duke of Norman dy in 1151. The following year, on the death of his father, he inherited the Angevin territories in France. By his marriage in 1152 to Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry added vast territories in southwestern France to his possessions. Henry claimed the English kingship through his mother, Matilda. She had been designated the heiress of Henry I but had been deprived of the succession by her cousin, Stephen of Blois, who made himself king. In 1153 Henry defeated S tephen's armies in England and compelled the king to choose him as his succes sor; on Stephen's death, the following year, Henry became king. During the fi rst few years of his reign Henry quelled the disorders that had developed dur ing Stephen's reign, regained the northern counties of England, which had pre viously been ceded to Scotland, and conquered North Wales. In 1171-72 he began the Norman conquest of Ireland and in 1174 forced William the Lion, king of the Scots, to recognize him as overlord.

In 1164 Henry became involved in a quarrel with Thomas … Becket, whom he had appointed archbishop of Canterbury . By the Constitutions of Clarendon, the king decreed that priests accused of crimes should be tried in royal courts; Becket claimed that such cases shoul d be handled by ecclesiastical courts, and the controversy that followed ende d in 1170 with Becket's murder by four of Henry's knights. Widespread indignation over the murder forced the king to rescind his decree and recognize Becket as a martyr. Although he failed to subject the church to his courts, Henry's judicial reforms were of lasting significance. In England he established a centralized system of justice accessible to all freemen and administered by judges who traveled around the country at regular intervals. He also began the process of replacing the old trial by ordeal with modern court procedure s. From the beginning of his reign, Henry was involved in conflict with Loui s VII, king of France, and later with Louis's successor, Philip II, over the French provinces that Henry claimed. A succession of rebellions against Henry , headed by his sons and furthered by Philip II and by Eleanor of Aquitaine, began in 1173 and continued until his death at Chinon, France, on July 6, 118 9. Henry was succeeded by his son Richard I, called Richard the Lion-Hearted.

Henry married Eleanor Of Aquitaine, Duchess Of Aquitaine Aquitaine Duchess Of Aquitaine on 18 May 1152 in Bordeaux, Gironde, France 43.,44 Eleanor was born about 1123 in Chateau de Belin, Gironde, France,43,44 was christened in France (aka Alienor of Guienne'), died on 1 Apr 1204 in Mirabell Castle, Tarn et Garonne, France 43,44 about age 81, and was buried on 1 Apr 1204 in nunnery at Fontevrault Abbey, Maine.

Ancestral File Number: 9G80-MC.

General Notes: Source: Frederick Lewis Weis, Magna Charta Sureties, 4th Edition, (1968), 74-1.

SAIRE de QUINCEY, the Surety, born before 1154, was a Baron present at Lincoln when William the Lion of Scotland did homage to the English monarch in October 1200. He obtained large grants and immunities from King John and was created Earl of Winchester, 2 March 1207, having been governor in 1203 of the Castle of Ruil in Normandy. He is created with rewriting Magna Charta from the Charter of King Henry I and the Saxon Code. Because he had opposed the King’s concession to the Pope’s legate, he was bitterly hated by King John.

One of the Barons to whom the City and Tower of London were resigned, Saire de Quincey was excommunicated with the other Barons the following year. He was sent, with Robert FitzWalter, the Surety, by the other Barons, to invite the Dauphin of France to assume the Crown of England and, even after the death of King John, he kept a strong garrison in Montsorell Castle in behalf of Prince Louis.

When the Barons, being greatly outnumbered, were defeated by the troops of King Henry III, Saire de Quincey, with many others, was made prisoner and his estates forfeited. In the following October his immense estates were restored upon his submission. In 1218 the Earl of Winchester went with the Earls of Chester and Arundel to the Holy Land, assisted at the siege of Damietta in 1219, and died 3 November in the same year, on the way to Jerusalem. His wife was Margaret Beaumont, whom he married before 1173.

At the beginning of John’s reign, Saire de Quincey was not a Baron, much less a great one. In the civil war the King had had the advantage over the rebels. Few of the Barons had had much actual military experience. The Barons’ contribution to the war was the scutage they paid, a war fund substituted for the contingent of knights owed to the King’s service. The money was collected from vassals, and mercenary knights were paid from it.

Many of the mercenaries were regulars who served the same Baron from campaign to campaign, but those Barons who are known to have had extensive military experience were only Saire de Quincey, Robert FitzWalter, William de Mowbray, William d’Albini, Roger de Cressi and Robert de Roos.

HIST ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE, QUEEN CONSORT OF FRANCE (1137-1152), QUEENCONSORT OF ENGALND (1154-1204), INHERITED THE DUCHY OF AQUITAINE FROM HERFATHER IN 1137, THE SAME YEAR SHE MARRIED LOUIS VII,KING OF FRANCE. SHE ACCOMPANIED HER HUSBAND ON THE DATE 24 MAY 2000

Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), renowned for h er cultivated intelligence and great beauty, was queen to two kings and mothe r of two others. She was one of the most powerful and fascinating personalit ies of feudal Europe. Eleanor was a granddaughter of Guillaume (William) IX of Aquitaine (1070-1127), who was one of the first and most famous troubadour s. He was a cheerful man and an ardent lover of women, who joined the First Crusade. When he returned from this disastrous crusade early in the centur y in a very cynical mood, he found his countess, Philippa of Toulouse, taken up with one of those religious movements perennially arising on the soil of A quitaine. He abandoned his lady and took up with the Countess of Chatellerau lt to enliven his middle years. The new countess was the mother of a daughte r, Anor (Eleanor) by her previous marriage and this young woman the troubado ur married to his own heir Guillaume X, born of Philippa. Anor and Guillaume X were the parents of Eleanor, a sister, Petronilla and a brother, Agret who did not survive childhood. The court of Guillaume X was the centre of weste rn European culture. Unlike most of her contemporaries, male and especially f emale, Eleanor was carefully educated and she was an excellent student. Elea nor's happy childhood ended with the subsequent deaths of her mother, her lit tle brother and, in 1137, her father. Heiress of the duchy of Aquitaine, the orphaned Eleanor was married to Louis VII King of France in 1137 at age 1 5, bringing into the union her vast possessions from the River Loire to the P yrenees. Louis had been brought up for an office in the church, but he had bec ome heir to the French throne after the death of his elder brother. He was a weak, dull, grave and pious man and he and the lively Eleanor were ill mat ched. Louis never understood his young wife, but he appears to have adored he r with a passionate admiration. It wasn't until 1145 that a daughter, Marie, was born. A few years after her marriage, at age 19, Eleanor knelt in the cat hedral of Vezelay before the celebrated Abbe Bernard of Clairvaux offering hi m thousands of her vassals for the Second Crusade which included "many othe r ladies of quality": Sybille, Countess of Flanders, whose half brother was K ing of Jerusalem, Mamille of Roucy, Florine of Bourgogne, Torqueri of Bouillo n, Faydide of Toulouse, and scores of others whom the chroniclers could not a fford the parchment to enumerate. No one appears to have asked publicly what t hese female warriors were to inflict upon the Saracens. The historians do no t well explain why hordes of women took up the cross, however, most deplore t he fact that the queen's example made other ladies intractable and to the Sec ond Crusade went "a good many women who had no business to be included in the army." A legend tells us that the queen and her ladies disappeared and presen tly reappeared on white horses in the guise of Amazons, in gilded buskins, plumed and with banners and that the queen and her cavalcade galloped over th e hillside of Vezelay, rallying laggard knights. The tale is in character, a nd later allusions to Amazons en route, found in Greek histories, give some s ubstance to it. While the church may have been pleased to receive her thousand fighting vassals, they were less happy when they learned that Eleanor, atten ded by 300 of her ladies, also planned to go to help "tend the wounded." The presence of Eleanor, her ladies and wagons of female servants, was critici zed by commentators throughout her adventure. Dressed in armor and carrying lances, the women never fought. In the papal bull for the next Crusade, it e xpressly forbade women of all sorts to join the expedition. All the Christia n monarchs, including King Louis, agreed to this. When they reached the city of Antioch, Eleanor found herself deep in a re
