William Arnold and his wife, Christian (Peak) Arnold, daughter of Thomas Peak, sailed from Dartmouth in Devonshire, England on May 1, 1635, arriving in the Massachusetts Bay Colony on June 24, 1635 with their four children: Elizabeth, age 23, Benedict, age 19, Joanna, age 17, and Stephen, age 12.
After residing a short time in Hingham, Mass, he, with his family, having planned an independent settlement, came to Providence April 20, 1636, but abandoned his plan and joined forces with Roger Williams in the settlement of Providence. The land was parcelled out among the associates, and he received large portions in Providence, Pawtuxet and Warwick. His name appears second on the "Initial Deed" at Providence, 1637, making him one of the 13 proprietors of Providence.
His elder son, Benedict, great-grandfather of the infamous General Benedict Arnold, became the First Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island under the Royal Charter of 1663 serving 10 years between 1663 and 1678.
