5120. Edward Gaskill,2 son of Thomas Gaskill and Unknown, was born on 6 Jun 1603 in Upholland in, Newgate, England.

General Notes: Edward Gaskill was a shipwright. He had a land grant in Salem Mass. in 1637, bought a house and land in 1659. Source:C.H. Pope's "Pioneer's of Mass." According to" Founders of Early Amer. Families" by M.B.Colket Jr. he was a ship's carpenter.

There is no definite record of the time of Edward's death or of his age when he died. Perley states but without reference to any authority, that he was born in 1603.(*) In a document verified by him, Edward stated that 22d, 3d month, 1674, he was then about 70 years old.** This may be Perley's authority and would fix 1603 or 1604 as the probable date of his birth.

On July 29, 1690, "Edward Gaskill, being very Sick and weake, but of perfect memory, as well for and in consideration of the fatherly love and affection which I have and do bear unto my well beloved sone in law John Lambert, in ye Same towne of Salem, Senior, as also for divers other good causes and considerations me at this present especialy moving: have given, granted and by these presents doe give & graunt & confirme unto the said John Lambert Senior, my son in law, all & singuler and every part and parcell of my now dwelling house or tenement, scituate, standing and being in the abovesaid towne of said Salem, the same wich I now dwell in, with all and every part and parcell of land joyning & belonging to the same, with ye privilidges and appurtenances thereunto belonging, and all and singuler my goods, chattells, leases, debts, ready money, plate, jewells, rings, household stuff, apparell, utensills, brass, pewter, bedding and all other my substance whatsoever moveable and imoveable, quick and dead, of what Kind, nature, quality or condition whatsoever. . . ."***

At the same time, John Lambert agreed to maintain his parents-in-law: "In consideration of this above written deed of gift, I the said. John Lambert, my heires, executors, administrators and assignes, doe engage by virtue hereof to maintaine my father and mother in law Edward and Sarah Gaskin during life, so that they shall not want any thing convenient for sufficient maintenance, and to bury them credibly when it shall, please God to take them out of this world by death, otherwise this deed of gift to be of no force or virtue. . . ." (*)Office of clerk of Essex County, County Court records, Vol. 3, p. 73.

**New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 25, p. 18, citing "Annals of Salem" Felt, p. 179.

The death of Edward Gaskill probably occurred in late 1690 or early 1691; shortly after he had turned everything over to his son-in law, for it is not likely that such a decisive step was taken until it had become necessary. It appears that Sarah survived her husband but the date of her death is not known. Edward and Sarah Gaskill had six children, whose baptismal records are found in Salem Vital Statistics, taken from the records of the First Church, where the baptisms occurred: Preserved baptised 6 mo. 7, 1639, Samuel baptized 6 mo. 7, 1639, Danyell baptized 8 mo. 10, 1640. Sara baptized 3 mo. 15, 1643, Hanna baptized 1 mo. 1, 1646 and Edward baptized 2 mo. 30, 1648.

see: http://www.starwarsfan.freeservers.com/GASKILL.htm

Doubtless Edward's remains were committed in accord with Quaker custom to an unmarked grave in the grounds of the first Friends Meeting of Mount Holly, on what was once known as Gaskill's Lane but is now called Wood Lane, north of the Mount. His extensive farm lands were nearby, just over the township line in Springfield Township. The site of his homestead, located here, has long been lost. Apparntly Edward disposed of all his property by deed or gift before his death for there is no record of his will or proceedings for the settlement of his estate as an intestate. At this time, 300 years afterward, it is impossible to assign a definite reason for the migration of Samuel Gaskill's sons. Edward and Josiah with Josiah Southwick, to New Jersey. The persecutions were over and it would seem that the Gaskills and the Southwicks who remained in Massachusetts lived out their days in peace, at least so far as religious controversy was involved.

Edward married Sarah Parker Mrs. Edward Gaskill.

Children from this marriage were:

          i.  Preserved Gaskill Mrs. Lambert was born on 7 Jun 1639 in Salem, Essex, MA.

5122. Lawrence Southwick 2,10 was born about 1585 in England and died in 1660 in Shelter Island, Long Island, NY about age 75.

General Notes: Lawrence and Cassandra were born and married in Enland. He first csme to America in 1627, returned to England, then came back with his wife and children John and Mary. The remaining children were born in Salem Mass. They were perse- cuted for being Quakers (whipped, fined, imprisoned), and in 1659 they were banished from Salem on pain of death. They made it to Shelter Island in a row boat, and found refuge in the home of Nathaniel Sylvester where they died from privation and exposure. Lawrence had had the first glass factory in America. There is a monument in their honor where they died. Their children, Daniel and Provided were ordered to be sold into slavery to pay fines for not attending church, but no ship captain would take them (see Whittier's ballad "Cassandra Southwick". Bits of glass may still be found at the site of their factory.
Cassandra and Lawrence may have been cousins as Quakers were not allowed to marry outside of meeting, and there was legacy of cousins marrying. Quakers were a close knit group and followed the same migration paths. Lawrence Southwick was an early American glassmaker. He took the Freeman's Oath and was a member of the body politic, became a member of the Church and thereby fulfilled the requirement to own land. His roots were in Lancastershire, England. He moved to Salem in 1629 and brought his wife and children where they lived in peace until 1658 when it was discovered that most of his family practiced the Quaker faith. They were subsequently imprisoned, whipped, and fined. Lawrence and Cassandra were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and under "payne of death" should they return. Lawrence's will was dated 10 July 1659 and allowed 1660.

Lawrence and Cassandra were married January 25, 1623/4 in Kingswinford, county Stafford, England. Lawrence's parents have not been identified, but a candidate is mentioned in TAG 71:193, 1996. Cassandra's parents and three siblings have been identified as being from a parish close by, in Bearley, county Warwick, England. They were Humphrey and Margaret Burnell. General Notes: Research Notes: Cassandra Southwick is our most famous ancestor. Thirteen generation ago, she and her family were Quaker martyrs. Actually her name was Provided. Her name is confused in the "Ballad of Cassandra Southwick", because poet John Greenleaf Whittier used her mother's name to indicate the "prophetic" nature of her trials. The Southwicks owned the first glass factory in Massachusetts bay colonies. This was in Salem, about thirty or forty years before the witch trials. They also own a small farm. As Quakers, they had their own meetings and and did not go to church. The parents were arrested and jailed for "not attending church". After a year in jail, their glass factory, home and farm were all sold at auction for "back taxes". When the auction did not raise enough to cover even one year's taxes, the two oldest children were ordered to be sold at auction, too! The 15 year old girl, was given many lashes for being mouthy. Both kids were sold to a ship bound for the Caribean, but after a week the ship couldn't get a wind to take it out of the harbor. The sailors said it was cause God was protecting the children. So they let the children off, and the she and brother walked to New York in the middle of winter. (No roads even existed). At Pitt's urging, the King told Massachusetts to go easier on the Quakers. So her parents were given a "Christmas Day Amnesty" that is, they were put in an open boat and told never to return to Massachuesetts. They managed to make it to Shelter Island, New York (at the end of Long Island), and they died of exposure. A large stone monument is there. Now, that's the story you'll read from the Quakers. I think she actually just went to the Providence Plantation in Rhode Island where Provided married Samuel Gaskill. Get a copy of Whittier's Ballad. It's really very good.
