2560. Samuel Gaskill I,2,10 son of Edward Gaskill and Sarah Parker Mrs. Edward Gaskill, was born on 7 Jun 1639 in Salem, Essex Co, MA.

General Notes: Edward's son Samuel married Provided Southwick, the real heroine of Whittier's beautiful ballad of "Cassandra Southwick".Cassandra was the mother of Provided and Whittier substituted her name for her daughter's because it seemed more suitable for poetry. Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick were martyrs of the Quaker faith, and have a monument to them on Shelter Island N.Y.

Provided and her brother were ordered to be sold into slavery to the West Indes after their parents were thrown into prison for allowing Quakers to meet in their home. She is the only known white woman in the colonies to have been put on the auction block. See the poem and Quaker records for the end of the story.

Research Notes: Actually the thirteenth generation

Samuel married Provided Southwick Mrs. Samuel Gaskill, I on 30 Oct 1662 in Salem, Essex Co, MA. Provided was born in Dec 1641 in Salem, Essex Co, MA and died on 4 Dec 1727 in Salem, Essex Co, MA at age 86. Another name for Provided was Cassandra.

• Alt. Marriage: The marriage of Samuel Gaskill and Provided Southwick is recorded in the minutes of the Salem Friends published in the Vital Statistics, as occurring on 10 mo. (December) 3, 1662,

2561. Provided Southwick Mrs. Samuel Gaskill, I,2,10 daughter of Lawrence Southwick and Cassandra Burnell Mrs. Lawrence Southwick, was born in Dec 1641 in Salem, Essex Co, MA and died on 4 Dec 1727 in Salem, Essex Co, MA at age 86. Another name for Provided was Cassandra.

General Notes: Cassandra Southwick is our most famous ancestor. Thirteen generation ago, she and her family were Quaker martyrs. Actually her name was Provided. Her name is confused in the "Ballad of Cassandra Southwick", because poet John Greenleaf Whittier used her mother's name to indicate the "prophetic" nature of her trials.

The Southwicks owned the first glass factory in Massachusetts bay colonies. This was in Salem, about thirty or forty years before the witch trials. They also own a small farm. As Quakers, they had their own meetings and and did not go to church. The parents were arrested and jailed for "not attending church". After a year in jail, their glass factory, home and farm were all sold at auction for "back taxes". When the auction did not raise enough to cover even one year's taxes, the two oldest children were ordered to be sold at auction, too! The 15 year old girl, was given many lashes for being mouthy. Both kids were sold to a ship bound for the Caribean, but after a week the ship couldn't get a wind to take it out of the harbor. The sailors said it was cause God was protecting the children. So they let the children off, and the she and brother walked to New York in the middle of winter. (No roads even existed). At Pitt's urging, the King told Massachusetts to go easier on the Quakers. So her parents were given a "Christmas Day Amnesty" that is, they were put in an open boat and told never to return to Massachuesetts. They managed to make it to Shelter Island, New York (at the end of Long Island), and they died of exposure. A large stone monument is there.

described in the minutes of the Friends Monthly Meeting at Lynn, Massachusetts:(*) "Sarah ye daughter of Samuel and Provided Gaskill departed this life ye 3rd day of ye 6th month called August 1689, & in ye time of her sickness her harte was much rendered and her soul breathed toward ye Lord, and panted after devine Consolation, & cryd to her father and Mother and said my dear father pray to ye Lord for me yet I may be made willing to dye & to her Mother likewise she said my dear Mother pray for me Earnestly to ye Lord yet I may be made willing to dye & desired her Mother to send for me, & when I came to her she said to me dear James pray to ye Lord for me Even wth ye Lord Jesus in his Kingdom of rest and peace, this is my testimony for this dear Child, who was but yonge in years but dyed in ye Lord and rests wth him in glory" Signed by James Goodridge.

Research Notes: Now, that's the story you'll read from the Quakers. I think she actually just went to the Providence Plantation in Rhode Island where Provided married Samuel Gaskill. Get a copy of Whittier's Ballad. It's really very good.

married a daughter of Francis Fowler(who was a member of the House ofBurgesses in 1642).

Bridges FREEMAN - b. about 1603, Oxfordshire, England; d. after 1655, VA. Son of Thomas FREEMAN and Frances BENNETT. Arriving in America about 1622, Bridges bore military titles of Commander of the Maine, Adjutant, Captain and Lieutenant-Colonel. On March 4, 1629-30 he became a Burgess from Pasbyhoy, in September 1632 from Chickahominy, and in 1647 from James City County. He was named to the Virginia Council of State, April 30, 1652, and was re-elected in 1655. In 1648, Bridges had a bequest of 200 acres of land from widow Antonia FOWLER. Bridges married Bridget about 1635, reportedly in VA. Land records for Bridges, as cited in Freeman Forebears, include:

"On December 1, 1635, he patented one hundred and fifty acres of land in James City County. On August 11, 1637, he and Francis Fowler patented nine hundred acres, probably on the Chickahominy. On August 12, 1637, he patented one hundred acres on the east side of the Chicahominy. On August 5, 1640, an additional one hundred acres was patented, 'lying in the woodyard, adjoining Southerly unto four hundred acres now in possession said Freeman.' Later we find that eight hundred acres granted to both Freeman and Fowler is patented solely by Freeman. This land was originally allowed for transporting eighteen people to Virginia."

iii.  Henry Freeman was born in 1642.

2913. Bridget Fowler Mrs. Col. Bridges Freeman,1 daughter of Francis Fowler and Mrs. Fowler, was born about 1605 in England and died in Virginia.

General Notes: Bridget - b. est. 1605-15, England; d. VA. With no solid evidence, Bridget has been called the daughter of Francis FOWLER, VA Burgess in 1642 and deceased by Feb 1643/4, apparently based on patents of lands granted "by the will of Mrs. Antonia Fowler the late relict of Mr. Francis Fowler part of a dividend due sd Fowler by patent Aug. 4, 1639." Two hundred acres of this land was bequeathed to Capt. Bridges FREEMAN. Lists of persons living in VA provide the following: James City, 1623 Francis FOULER; Elizabeth City, 1623 William FOULLER; Elizabeth City 1624 Widow FOWLER; James City, 1625 Francis FOWLER, age 23. Based on the patents of land granted by Antonia FOWLER, and the FOWLERs listed, Bridget may have been the sister of: William FOWLER (b. about 1595) married Margaret; Francis FOWLER (b. about 1602; d. between Apr 1642 and Feb 1643/4) married Antonia; Miss FOWLER married Capt. Henry BROWNE; and possibly others. It is possible that Bridget was daughter of the Widow FOWLER of Elizabeth City 1624. Refer also to The Evelyn Family in My Southern Families, by Hiram Kennedy Douglass (1967), which identifies Bridget as Bridgett EVELYN, daughter of George EVELYN and Jane CRANE.

2930. Captain John Bishop 1 was born about 1612 in England and died in 1655-1656 in Charles City CO, VA about age 43.

General Notes: In his great-grandson's will (Asa, b. 1753), Capt. John Bishop was said to have been one of the earliest settlers in Virginia, settling on the south side of the James River, above old Jamestown, and was of old English stock. There was a Capt. John who came to the US on the ship "Paule" in 1635. He left the Port of London 6 July 1635. This Capt. Bishop may not be the immigrant ancestor of the Bishop's here. The John who came over on the Paule more likely is the one described in THE BISHOP FAMILY, discussed below. There is a great deal of confusion of the John Bishop line shown by Bobby Gerald Adams in THE BISHOP FAMILY, 1982, and the Capt. John Bishop line. Some think his wife Elizabeth may have been the sister of George Menefee/Menifee.

Captain John Bishop settled on the south side of the James River. He was elected to the VA House of Burgess in 1644, 1652, & 1653.
