There has been more information uncovered since this writ 1 CONC ing, but the main point is to debunk the previous theorie 1 CONC s of Simon Hadley's parents. Let's get these erroneous line 1 CONC s out of the GEDCOMs and other internet programs...so thi 1 CONC s misinformation will not continue to be circulated as gosp 1 CONC el! The last James Hadley of the Somerset line died over 10 1 CONC 0 years before our Simon was supposedly born. This is an im 1 CONC possible lineage. We now know that Simon was living in Dubl 1 CONC in in 1665, 1668, 1672, and 1685 from the various document 1 CONC s discovered by Fiona FitzSimons of Eneclann, Dublin, Ireland. (See Irish Reports ) We've also found further descendants of Benjami 1 CONC n Hadley in Ireland, not listed below. In defense of the ea 1 CONC rlier researchers, it was reasonable to assume that Simon c 1 CONC ame from the gentry class, as his petition of 1680 describe 1 CONC s him as a Gentleman. This had great significance in thos 1 CONC e times, as the gentry were only 1-2% of society, and upwar 1 CONC d mobility was the exception. It is very likely that the pa 1 CONC rents and grand parents of Simon were gentry, so that i 1 CONC s a significant clue. I think it is likely that the birth d 1 CONC ate of Simon as 1640 was an estimate by earlier researchers 1 CONC . I have never seen any evidence of his birth date, or thos 1 CONC e of his children.(The exception being Sollomon, who was ch 1 CONC ristened at St Michans in 1672) The first proven birth date 1 CONC s I have seen are for the children of Simon and Ruth. As w 1 CONC e find earlier and yet earlier references for Simon Hadle 1 CONC y in Dublin, my suspicion increases that Simon was probabl 1 CONC y born earlier than 1640. Perhaps we'll someday find positi 1 CONC ve proof of all this, but in the meantime I think it's impo 1 CONC rtant to document our sources, and to be conservative and h 1 CONC onest in our reporting. (Germany) 1 CONT 1 CONT The researcher is going on the assumption that the origin 1 CONC a l John (1584) had parents in England, and that he had bro 1 CONC th ers. His story begins when Queen Elizabeth was on the t 1 CONC hro ne in England. This John was our emigrant ancestor in 1 1 CONC 63 3 from England, of the Westpart, with his wife Esther 1 CONC , 3 s ons and a daughter.. 1 CONT 1 CONT He emigrated with his family to Roxbury, Ma, in 1633. H 1 CONC i s name appears in the Elliott's Church record. He was ma 1 CONC d e a freeman with John Walker, Wm. Brenton, Thomas Hubbar 1 CONC d a nd John Baker in Boston, MA,on 14 May, 1634 (or) i 1 CONC n 1635 . He removed to Hartford, CT, in 1639 and in 1650 h 1 CONC e wen t to Middletown, CT. He died there. He was one of t 1 CONC he pio neers in the discovery of Connecticut and in settlem 1 CONC ents th ere. His wife Esther died a long time before him 1 CONC . It look s as if she died right after they were married 1 CONC , perhaps fro m the first childbirth? John married second 1 CONC , it appears, t o Susanna Shakespeare, the daughter of Will 1 CONC iam Shakespeare , the famous bard. It was she who was th 1 CONC e mother of his ch ildren John, born 1619, Richard, 1620 1 CONC , Sarah , 1622, an d Samuel, 1626, all born in England. 1 CONT 1 CONT John settled first in Cambridge when he arrived from Coven 1 CONC t ry or Meriden, Warwickshire, England in 1633 at Boston 1 CONC . S oon he removed to Roxbury where the prefix of respect 1 CONC , Mr. , was accorded to him on the records of Mr. Eliot's c 1 CONC hurch . This prefix was given to only a few persons and i 1 CONC t indic ated that they were entitled to great honor. Thi 1 CONC s same yea r he and John Oldham and two other men started f 1 CONC or the Conn ecticut River, where they were reported to be i 1 CONC n October o f that year. 1 CONT 1 CONT John knew John Oldham (who was a prosperous trader who h 1 CONC a d earlier quarrelled with the Pilgrim fathers, but had be 1 CONC co me reconciled). Our John and John Oldham and two other 1 CONC s lef t Massachusetts Bay and started on an expedition to t 1 CONC he Con necticut River in September of 1633. Their purpos 1 CONC e was t o explore and to trade. They went as far as the fu 1 CONC ture sit es of Hartford and Wethersfield , lodging in India 1 CONC n village s along the way. John may have also been the Hal 1 CONC l listed wi th a second expedition to Connecticut in Novemb 1 CONC er of the sa me year. This time they got lost and found mu 1 CONC ch smallpox a nd no trade among the Indians, the old accoun 1 CONC ts say. 1 CONT 1 CONT The adventure ended in 1634 when they returned to the Ba 1 CONC y t owns. It was their report of the rich lands on the Conn 1 CONC ecti cut River which led to the migration from Dorchester a 1 CONC nd Ca mbridge to Wethersfield, Windnsor and Hartford in 163 1 CONC 5 an d 1636. 1 CONT 1 CONT John was young and unmarried and was just starting out i 1 CONC n l ife. He occupied his time in a way that may have set th 1 CONC e pa ttern for a number of his descendants, including his 4 1 CONC th gr eat-grand son, Elbridge Gerry Hall. 1 CONT 1 CONT He came from England as part of the Rev. Thomas Hooker' 1 CONC s c ompany. He was either part of the advance party that a 1 CONC rriv ed in 1632 at Cambridge, or, he was with the Hartfor 1 CONC d found ers (Thomas Hooker's group) in the fall of 1635. T 1 CONC hey cam e by way of Holland on the two ships, Griffin and B 1 CONC ird. The y landed on 4 September 1633. (Was this the landi 1 CONC ng in Hol land?) Thomas Hooker was one of the foremost of c 1 CONC olonial pa stors and was considered more democratic in hi 1 CONC s thinking th an most of the other religious leaders of Mas 1 CONC sachusetts Bay . When he was made a freeman , John was eit 1 CONC her with the ad vance settlers to Wethersfield in the fal 1 CONC l of 1634, plantin g onions a few miles below the Dutch pos 1 CONC t. with 10 others l ed by John Oldham. One thing is for su 1 CONC re : our John was i n Hartford as one of the first Purita 1 CONC n settlers and that h e went to the Pequot War of 1637 fro 1 CONC m there. He saw servic e in May and June of that year wit 1 CONC h Captain John Mason an d other CT men. The Pequot War wa 1 CONC s bloody , vengeful and sh ort, and the Pequot tribe neve 1 CONC r recovered from it. The land wa 1 CONC s o n Lord's Hill, later called Asylum Hill, and was descr 1 CONC ibe d in a 1902 account as being located south of Asylum St 1 CONC ree t and west of the railway. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1650 the domain of the great Sachem Sowheag (Indian chi 1 CONC e f) at Mattabeseck was invaded by the English. He made t 1 CONC h e palefaces welcome, as he had done in the past, giving l 1 CONC an ds to Governor Haynes, even though he was powerful enoug 1 CONC h t o destroy the few families that settled there. Apparent 1 CONC l y some land was purchased from the Indian chief. Part o 1 CONC f N ew Haven was purchased by the English from his son, Mon 1 CONC tawe se. His fort or castle was on Indian Hill, away fro 1 CONC m the s ettlers. He had a whistle which he would use to ca 1 CONC ll all h is warriors together, as many as 500, whose wigwam 1 CONC s were th ick all along both sides of the Connecticut River. 1 CONT 1 CONT Into this morass moved John Hall and Esther (I question th 1 CONC i s; he was probably married to Susanna by now and she bor 1 CONC e h is 3 sons and a daughter. Esther was dead early on). h 1 CONC is w ife, 3 sons and a daughter, to make their homes. In N 1 CONC ovemb er 1653, the place was named Middletown. There wer 1 CONC e possi bly 30 families living there by 1654. Twenty year 1 CONC s later th ere were only 52 householders in the town. Joh 1 CONC n was with J ohn Richard and Samuel Hall, his sons. It i 1 CONC s said the Hall s of Middleboro had in England a coat of ar 1 CONC ms with the mott o, 'Fidelity'. This one word aptly describ 1 CONC es the characte r of this family. 1 CONT 1 CONT They were the first settlers in Long Hill, which began ne 1 CONC a r 1675. There is amongst the old paper 1 CONC s in t he family at Long Hill a deed of land from John Hall 1 CONC , Ensig n, and wife to their son, John Hall. Also, a pape 1 CONC r conferr ing on John Hall a Captain's commission signed b 1 CONC y John Wint hrop, Gov. of Connecticut. 1 CONT 1 CONT The settlers had a great deal of heavy work in clearing o 1 CONC f f the stones, as the old moss-covered walls will show. N 1 CONC ea rly enough stones to fence the land were found on its su 1 CONC rfa ce, and in some places were large boulders. These wer 1 CONC e cu t and used for cellar walls. 1 CONT 1 CONT The first vote of Middletown, of which any record is kep 1 CONC t , is the following: 'Feb. the 10th , 1652. it was agre 1 CONC e d at a meeting at John Hall's hous, to build a meeting ho 1 CONC u s and to make i t twenty fot square and ten fot between s 1 CONC il l and plat, the heygt of it'. We are glad to know tha 1 CONC t th e meeting to plan for the first meetinghouse was hel 1 CONC d at 'J ohn Hall's hous.' This fact throws light on his ci 1 CONC rcumstan ces and standing in the little community. The ear 1 CONC liest rec ords of Middletown show that he was a man of dist 1 CONC inction am ong his associates. 1 CONT 1 CONT The original deed from the Indians to the inhabitants of M 1 CONC i ddletown was witnessed by John Hall and entered by John H 1 CONC al l, Jr. in the old court book of records. The first meet 1 CONC ing house stood near the entrance to the first graveyard, n 1 CONC ow c alled Riverside Cemetery. 150 ac. were laid out fo 1 CONC r a pars onage, and a large piece of land for a 'common'. T 1 CONC he old la nd records show one of the first land deeds wen 1 CONC t to John Ha ll of Buck Point, bounded south and east by th 1 CONC e Connecticu t River. This point is opposite the city wer 1 CONC e the river tur ns toward the straits, and is now some dist 1 CONC ance inland owin g to the accumulation around it of sand an 1 CONC d debris brough t down by the freshets year by year. 1 CONT 1 CONT He was in Middletown in 1650 and had a home lot of 5 ac 1 CONC . w as located on the NE corner of Main and Washington stre 1 CONC ets . It extended down to the Great River and adjoined th 1 CONC e hom elot of his son-in-law, Thomas Wetmore(Sarah's husban 1 CONC d). Thirteen generation ago, she and her family were Quak 1 CONC er martyrs. Actually her name was Provided. Her name is con 1 CONC fused in the "Ballad of Cassandra Southwick", because poe 1 CONC t John Greenleaf Whittier used her mother's name to indicat 1 CONC e the "prophetic" nature of her trials. 1 CONT The Southwicks owned the first glass factory in Massachuset 1 CONC ts bay colonies. This was in Salem, about thirty or forty y 1 CONC ears before the witch trials. They also own a small farm. A 1 CONC s Quakers, they had their own meetings and and did not go t 1 CONC o church. The parents were arrested and jailed for "not att 1 CONC ending church". After a year in jail, their glass factory 1 CONC , home and farm were all sold at auction for "back taxes" 1 CONC . When the auction did not raise enough to cover even one y 1 CONC ear's taxes, the two oldest children were ordered to be sol 1 CONC d at auction, too! The 15 year old girl, was given many las 1 CONC hes for being mouthy. Both kids were sold to a ship bound f 1 CONC or the Caribean, but after a week the ship couldn't get a w 1 CONC ind to take it out of the harbor. The sailors said it was c 1 CONC ause God was protecting the children. So they let the child 1 CONC ren off, and the she and brother walked to New York in th 1 CONC e middle of winter. (No roads even existed). At Pitt's urgi 1 CONC ng, the King told Massachusetts to go easier on the Quakers 1 CONC . So her parents were given a "Christmas Day Amnesty" tha 1 CONC t is, they were put in an open boat and told never to retur 1 CONC n to Massachuesetts. They managed to make it to Shelter Isl 1 CONC and, New York (at the end of Long Island), and they died o 1 CONC f exposure. A large stone monument is there. 1 CONT Now, that's the story you'll read from the Quakers. I thin 1 CONC k she actually just went to the Providence Plantation in Rh 1 CONC ode Island where Provided married Samuel Gaskill. Get a cop 1 CONC y of Whittier's Ballad.
