Twenty-fifth Generation
16913920. Fulk V Count Of Anjou, King Of Jerusalem, son of Fulk IV Count Of Anjou and Bertrade De Montford, was born in 1092 20,21 and died on 10 Nov 1143 in Acre, Palestine 20,21 at age 51.
General Notes: Fulk V, Count of Anjou, was born 1092, and was C ount 1109-1142. He married 1st Ermengarde, daughter of Helias, Count of Main e, and had by her his heir, Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, Helias, who became Cou nt of Maine or Mayenne, and two daughters, Sybilla and Matilda. He married 2 nd Melesenda, daughter of Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem, and became King of J erusalem at the death of his father-in-law Sept. 4, 1131. Fulk V was son of Bertrada de Montford, who eventually deserted her husband and became the mistr ess of Philip I of France. Fulk became Count of Anjou in 1109, and showed hi mself a doughty opponent to Henry I, King of England, against whom he contin ually supported Louis VI of France until, in 1127, Henry I won him over by betrothing his daughter Matilda to Fulk's son Geoffrey Plantagenet. Already in 1120 Fulk V had visited the Holy Land and became a close friend of the Templars. On his return he assigned to the Order of the Templars an annual subsidy , while he also maintained two knights in the Holy Land for a year. In 1128 he was preparing to return to the East when he received an embassy from Baldw in II, King of Jerusalem, who had no male heir to succeed him, offering his daughter Melisinda in marriage, with the right of eventual succession to the kingdom. Fulk accepted the offer, and in 1129 he came and married Melisinda, receiving the towns of Acre and Tyre as her dower. In 1131, when Baldwin die d, he became King of Jerusalem. His reign is not marked by any considerable events; the kingdom which had reached its zenith under Baldwin II, and did no t begin to decline till the capture of Edessa in the reign of Baldwin III, was quietly prosperous under his rule.
In the beginning of his reign he had to act as Regent of Antioch, and provide a husband, Raymond of Poitou, for the infant heiress Constance, daughter of Bohemund. (Her 2nd husband was Raymond of Chatillion, from whom you descend, and which gives you Bohemond, her grandfather, Leader of the First Crusade.) Twice in Fulk's reign the Eastern Emper or John Comnenus appeared in northern Syria, in 1137 and 1142, but his comin g did not affect the King, who was able to decline politely a visit which th e Emperor proposed to make to Jerusalem. In 1143 he died, leaving two sons by Melisande, who both became Kings of Jerusalem, as Baldwin III and Almaric I . Fulk had continued the tradition of good statesmanship and sound churchmansh ip which Melisande's father and grandfather, Baldwin I and II had begun. His son by his first wife succeeded him as Count of Anjou.

General Notes: Henry I (of England) (1068-1135), third Norman king of England (1100-1135), fourth son of William the Conqueror. Henry was bo rn in Selby. Because his father, who died in 1087, left him no land, Henry made several unsuccessful attempts to gain territories on the Continent. On the death of his brother William II in 1100, Henry took advantage of the absence of another brother Robert, who had a prior claim to the throne to seize th e royal treasury and have himself crowned king at Westminster. Henry subseque ntly secured his position with the nobles and with the church by issuing a ch arter of liberties that acknowledged the feudal rights of the nobles and the rights of the church. In 1101 Robert, who was duke of Normandy, invaded Engla nd, but Henry persuaded him to withdraw by promising him a pension and milita ry aid on the Continent. In 1102 Henry put down a revolt of nobles, who subse quently took refuge in Normandy, where they were aided by Robert.
By defeating Robert at Tinchebray, France, in 1106, Henry won Normandy. During the rest of his reign, however, he constantly had to put down uprisings that threatened his rule in Normandy. The conflict between Henry and Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, over the question of lay investiture (the appointment of church officials by the king), was settled in 1107 by a compromise that left the king with substantial control in the matter.
Because he had no surviving male heir, Henry was forced to designate his daughter Matilda as his heiress. After his death on December 1, 1135, at Lyons-la-F“ret, Normandy, however, Henry's nephew, Stephen of Blois, usurped the throne, plunging the country into a protracted civil war that ended only with the accession of Matilda's son, Henry II, in 1154.

General Notes: Louis VI, the Fat (born 1081, ruled 1108-37), wa s the first important king of the Capetian line. This line sprang from Hugh Capet, who became king in 987. Louis the Fat was a great fighter, a great hunter, and a great eater. At 46 he became too fat to mount a horse, but he remained the embodiment of warlike energy. His great task was to reduce to ord er the petty nobles of the royal domain, who could truly be called robber barons.
When Louis came to the throne, every lord of a castle robbed at will and it was not safe for even the king to pass along the road. Twenty years of har d fighting were necessary to remedy this condition, but in the end, law and order prevailed. So that such evils might not recur, every castle that was cap tured was destroyed or given to faithful followers.

Louis VI, called The Fat (1081-1137), king of France (1108-37), son and successor of Philip I; he was married to Adelaide of Savoy. Almost his entire reign was spent in subduing the robber barons, who preyed on the environs of Paris but were finally forced to yield to royal authority. For some 20 years during the period from 1109-1135, Louis waged war against Henry I, the Norman king of England, and against Henry's son-in-law, Holy Roman Emperor Henry V; he successfully repelled an invasion by Henry V in 1124. Louis greatly strengthed the royal power in France, granted benefactions to the church and privileges to towns, and became known as the protector of the peasants and as a fearless military leader. He was succeeded on the throne by his son Louis VII. "Louis VI,

General Notes: William the Marshal, Earl of Pembroke (via his y oung wife), Lord of Striguil and Regent of England (in the minority of Henry I II) was appropriately eulogised at his funeral by Archbishop Langton of Canter bury who said, "Here lies all that remains of the best knight of all the world who has lived in our time." William was renown across Europe for his courage , honesty and loyalty to his country, and served with much distinction as a ch ief officer of several kings. {His biography is "L'Historie de Guillaume le Marechal," probably written by his squire, John Earley. His life and importanc e are summarized in "The Magnificent Century," Thomas B. Costain (Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Co., 1951), pp. 41ff.} He fought in more than 500 duels in th e tilting ring and lost none nor was seriously injured in any of the many batt les in which he fought. He was in the Holy Land on crusade c. 1185-87, was one of the regents during Richard's absence (1190), etc. His five sons succeeded him one by one as earl. Source: Al Myers ----------------------------------- --------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ ----------------- William Marshall, the powerful earl of Pembroke, was one of the outstanding men of his day, a landl ess son of an English, knightly family, who had made a name for himself in An gevin France by his formidable fighting ability and his uncompromising loyalt y to those he served. He stayed loyal to the old king, Henry II, when almost all others deserted him for his rebel sons. Richard "Lionheart," one of these sons, respected Marshall both for his loyalty to his father and for his skil l as a soldier (he had unhorsed Richard in a skirmish, but spared his life) . When Richard became king he married William to la pucelle d'Estriguil - "Th e Maid of Chepstow," the heiress Isabelle de Clare. The phrase comes from a spirited verse biography in medieval French, which makes William Marshall one of the few men of his age who appears to us, to some extent, as an individua l rather than an anonymous figure in a suit of mail or a bishop's mitre. Wil liam fitz Osbern's great castle of Chepstow had stood unchanged for nearly a century and a half. William Marshall, however, was a notable castle builder w ho remodelled several strongholds in the up to date techniques of military ar chitecture familiar to him from his career in France. His most impressive wor k is the great round keep at Pembroke, guarding the sea route between his Bri tish and Irish lands. Marshall also built the castle at Usk, northwest of Che pstow.
