Jean,Please see the obituary from the
Roswell Daily Record, Monday, April 21, 1947. It appears the family
never knew about Della. However, we have solved the mystery...we now
know what happened to Tom Lindley. The obituary is incorrect because
Cecil Lindley died two years before his father.
You have a living 1/2 Aunt
Eunice.
I am amazed that the obituary
has Beatrice and Cecil listed.
Enjoy,
Dee
(note: Eunice was incorrectly listed as Mrs Wilkins instead of Atkins....Bettyatkins)
Dee,
That's great news! One again, great-uncle David
Lindley's family info has proven accurate. Dexter is very near Roswell,
so Tom must have had contact with his sister, Beth Barton, toward the
end of his life. I'm going to try my best to locate someone from the
Barton family for further info.

Still waiting for the marriage certificate requested from Erath. I did check Hamilton County for a divorce record of G.T. & Iola Lindley and did not find. I have a call back pending to the Comanche county clerk on Monday...she is going page by page. I still need to check Erath county. Best wishes, Dee ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Charters To: Dee A. I
just returned home this
evening from vacation and wanted to reply as soon as possible. Oh
my, it seems I'm always amazed at the new info that occasionally
surfaces!
I'm
not certain just yet how we
might be able to prove it, but I'm of the opinion at this time that the
George Thomas Lindley you are seeking is the same man who was my
great-uncle and Betty's grandfather. I know of no other George
Thomas Lindley in the Comanche or Erath Co. TX areas during your
timeline. My father never spoke of Tom being married at all and
one of David Lindley's daughters who remembers Tom and is still
living (age 83), had no clue Tom had ever married. It is sheer
luck that Betty Atkins and I discovered each other!
Tom
is supposed to have been
last living in New Mexico and died in 1947, according to a family
record David Lindley left for his children. It is possible that
he was in Dexter, Chaves County, as his sister, Amanda Elizabeth
Lindley Barton lived there. Tom would occasionally stay with
David's family in Texas and it wouldn't be impossible to think he may
have done likewise at Amanda's in NM. (she was called Beth).
There definitely was family living in Erath Co. TX.
Tom's elder brother, William P.
Lindley, was married and living there by 1910, if not before. And
it appears his brother, Albert Lindley, also lived there shortly as his
wife and infant daughter, who died within a few days of each other in
1911, are buried at Pony Creek Cemetery.I
have also discovered the
identical situation with another brother in the family, Henry W.
Lindley. It appears he 1st married a Melinda Whitten in Comanche
Co. 1904. They had 5 children by 1914 and by 1917 they were no
longer together. He remarried in 1937 and had a daughter in that
marriage and those of my father's generation never knew anything about
the 1st family! I can only imagine my grandfather's generation
just didn't talk of these things and unfortunately many secrets were
kept.
I
will do some more thinking
about this and how we might be able to determine if we're on the right
track, but the resemblance to Betty's family is uncanny and this whole
scenario does tend to fill in a large gap in
information concerning Tom's life before his marriage to Betty's
grandmother. Linda
